DIARY DATES: January 2011

For those neurotics who have optimistically entered the New Year with hopes of sticking to an improbable fitness regime, wishes of exploring new educational horizons and the ever-repetitive declaration of learning a new musical instrument, put those recently purchased diaries and schedule notebooks to a more productive and less whimsical use by noting down our events guide for the upcoming months.

Vagabondz (with Zed Bias, Submotion Orchestra & Phaeleh) – Stylus, Leeds: 22 January

Vagabondz returns for the first time in 2011 with one almighty line up that in part plays homage to last years Outlook festival with The Bug & Flowdan, Kenny Ken and SMO, all of whom featured on 2010’s bill, presenting an evening of big Bass, Jungle, Dubstep and House. Check the promo video here.

Modulate (with George Fitzgerald & Submerse) – The Wire, Leeds: 26 January

Modulate’s first night of 2011 boasts an impressive line-up and an all-round big bass affair with George FitzGerald headlining the night at The Wire alongside Submerse and Doncaster trio Mista Men. Following his debut release ‘The Let Down’ on Hotflush Recordings last year, George FitzGerald has amassed considerable acclaim and support in the last twelve months for his amalgamation of house and garage melodies, draped over clipped vocal samples and 2-step patterns. His most notable comparisons are with his peers from Hotflush, Joy Orbison and Mount Kimbie with FitzGerald also becoming Orbison’s first signing to his prominent record label, Doldrums Recordings.

Towards the end of 2010 FitzGerald’s bootleg remix of Groove Theory’s ‘Tell Me’ triggered such pressing demand that it was released as a limited edition white label. With this and the more recent upload on Soundcloud of ‘Heart On Sleeves’ alongside further events scheduled under the producer’s own London club night, Man Make Music, 2011 is set to be an exciting and perhaps defining year.

Bangerang (with Congo Natty & Lil Silva) - Stinky's Peephouse, Leeds: 27 January

Congo Natty headline the largest Jungle-engrossed night of the month with support from Exodus and Lil Silva to ensure there is enough variety to keep everyone dancing until 5am.

Double Trouble Vision – Corsica Studios, London: 28 & 29 January

A wise man once said you could never have too much of a good thing. With regards to the monthly carouse in Elephant & Castle that is certainly the case, so much so that at the end of the month we are being spoiled with a double helping of trouble across the weekend. On Friday the 28th Corsica will host a showcase from Toddla T and Raf Daddy’s label ‘Girls Music’, with dub-veteran David Rodigan headling the bill, before the keys are handed over to Theo Parrish and AUS music for part two, with Will Saul and Ramadanman providing an eclectic array of House, Techno and Dubstep in the adjacent room to the legend from Detroit.
