Featuring HINGE FINGER

Incase you've been away, Hinge Finger is a new and promising label run by Joy Orbison and Will Bankhead. Hinge Fingers arrival on the scene was anything but conspicuous. Which is why our introducing feature on the label was so brief! One inspired mix from Orbison uploaded on to The Trilogy Tapes soundcloud last December was all we had to go on. Those of you that were paying attention during the mix's intro will remember that Orbison is always looking for 'that cutting edge music'. Bearing that in mind, the duo have struck gold with this first release. New-Yorker Madteo has delivered an outstanding ep on all fronts.

The EP is full of hazy, disorientating synths and vocal samples layered on top of fractured and fragmented basslines. A real masterclass in producing. You can preview and buy all four tracks here.

If this EP is up your street make sure you check out Madteo's previous output on Workshop and Meakusma Records. He really is a producer of the highest calibre.

With so much outstanding dance floor orientated bass music coming from UK labels at present it is good to see big names like Orbison pushing the slightly more cerebral end of the spectrum as well. Hopefully this first release is a sign of things to come from Hinge Finger.

Introducing BOXWORK

We're sure most of you have never heard of 22-year-old Londoner, Boxwork. However, after stumbling onto his Soundcloud recently we think that this year that is sure to change.

Influenced heavily by Jazz and Funk, Boxwork predominantly produced Hip-Hop up until last year. However, his attention was caught by artists like Ramadanman and Blawan which really shifted the focus to making some Bass driven dance music. Alongside the likes of South London Ordnance and Thefft, Boxwork is poised to join the ever expanding and rapidly diverse music scene in the UK.

With a debut release on the cards for sometime this year, Boxwork is definitely a producer you should follow.

Leeds Local #005: JAMES WELSH

The latest in our Leeds local series is no newcomer to the music scene, having already constructed a very popular previous project. This time though he's solo and using his everyday name, James Welsh.

Alongside his day job of working in a studio in Sheffield, James has turned his production skills to a stripped down, slowed down, version of House, sometimes even straying into the realms of Disco. Normally a grooved out bassline is prominent or an addictive vocal loop or perhaps a little nod to the past, perhaps even a touch of acid. Most importantly, all of it's tight and crisp. Here's a smooth Hip Hop little bootleg which he's made available for free.

Real Hip Hop (James Welsh's Landerneau Mix) - Das EFX

Recent news in the Welsh camp is that he's had an EP signed to Hypercolour's sister label Losing Suki. It's a four track release, straight up original productions. 'Integra' has been made available to download.

Integra - James Welsh

Enough of the chat, get this 70 minute mix on the download cos it's great...

Introducing VASE

The label might need introducing but the man behind VASE, namely one Jacques Greene, does not. With a great 2011 behind him, Greene is going out on his own with a new label and a new EP to launch it. His Concealer EP as well as having some new cuts from Greene himself, the EP also features collaborations with Koreless and fellow Canadian Ango.

Concealer EP - Jacques Greene [forthcoming VASE]

You can already pre-order the wax from RUBADUB and the full release is slated for the 30th of January.

Bwana - Over & Done EP

Leeds very own Bwana returns on Infinite Machine for his newest Over & Done EP which is out next week. This latest release sees three great brand new cuts from Bwana backed with three killer remixes from XI, Jack Dixon and Sibian & Faun.

Over & Done EP - Bwana [Infinite Machine]

The vinyl edition (which only has the XI remix included) is limited to 300 copies so make sure you grab yours pronto. You can grab the digital release from all the usual spots and both are available from Monday Jan 23rd.

Tuesday

Featuring TESSELA

Peverelist's highly regarded Punch Drunk label has released the details of its next release and it's a pretty rawkus affair. Having championed artists such as Andy Mac and Zhou in 2011, Tom Ford brings another up and coming producer to our attention in the form of Tessela.

Channel - Tessela [forthcoming Punch Drunk]

Both tracks jump out your speakers with an onslaught of heavy percussion and well-rounded sub bass. 'Channel' is the quicker of the two, and is built around different mutations of the same hook. 'D Jane', a little slower at 130bpm, is the one that cries out for a reload though. It's housey enough for you to feel the groove but still extremely intricate. Two absolutely heavyweight cuts.

D Jane - Tessela [forthcoming Punch Drunk]

Whilst we're on a Bristol tip, it is well worth checking out this RA film about the city, part of the Real Scenes series.

DRUNK027 will be released on 20th February 2012 on 12" vinyl and digital from Juno.

Machinedrum - SXLND

Here comes Machinedrum again with a killer EP inspired by classic Chicago and UK House called SXLND. Written last Summer, every track definitely has that deep, sun-soaked vibe to it and is some of Machinedrum's most dancefloor friendly material yet.

DDD - Machinedrum [forthcoming LuckyMe]

You can check out the rest of the EP here which is released today via LuckyMe digitally and on vinyl via all your usual music outlets. The vinyl release also has a free download of the Scuba remix of "No Respect".

Thursday

Featuring OBJEKT

Hessle Audio release their first material since the wonderful 116 & Rising compilation in the form of two punishing cuts from Objekt (you might remember the introducing feature we did on him last year). If you saw any of the Hessle crew play out last year, chances are you went at least a little crazy when 'Cactus' rumbled through the club - check the clips out here. Vinyl & digital release is set for 6th February 2011.

Manchester people can catch Objekt, Randomer and Addison Groove at Selective Hearing on 4th February.

Wednesday

Introducing ARTIFACT

Bristol's Ryan Bonfield, aka Artifact, was a hotly tipped name in the bass music scene last year and 2012 sees him get his long overdue debut release via Deadplate Records this month.

Archaic Line EP - Artifact [forthcoming Deadplate Records]

Artifact's debut release does not disappoint and 'Archaic Line' cuts right to the chase with a funky, bass heavy dance-floor burner. The flip 'Deserted' is equally well crafted and really drives home how quality this debut release really is. To top it off there is a killer remix by Graphics of 'Archaic Line' which has been getting much love from Mary Anne Hobbs on XFM.

While we are talking about Mary Anne Hobbs, Artifact has a mix lined-up for her XFM show on January 21st that should not be missed. To follow up that he is playing with Mosca and Pangaea in Leeds at Square One on 3 February - make sure you add that one to your calendar.

Archaic Line EP is set for release on 23 January via Deadplate Records on wax (+ digital) and is available to pre-order here. Until then, in case you missed it, check out Artifact's excellent Sonic Router Mix from last year, featuring great dubs from some of our new favourite producers including Ziro and Thefft.

Friday

Boddika & Joy O - Swims

If you have been to any club in the UK or any dance festival across the planet this year you have heard "Swims" repeatedly. This Tronco Traxx sampling club banger is Boddika and Joy Orbison's first of a few forthcoming collaborations and is now finally getting a release on vinyl via Swamp81.

Swims - Boddika & Joy Orbison [forthcoming Swamp81]

Backed with a more chord driven 'Alt Mix' Swims is available for pre-order now and will get a full release later this month. Also, make sure you check out Boddika and Joy Orbison's other forthcoming tracks "Froth" and "Mercy" which are to be released sometime in the future.

Introducing JESPER RYOM

Jesper Ryom is a name you need to nail firmly in your memory. The output so far has been outstanding. He is one of those producers that immediately stands out, grabbing your attention with his enormous musical talent. This one’s available for free, that’s all for now.

Thursday

Todd Terje - It's The Arps EP

In recent months this Norwegian super-producer, Todd Terje, has made a substantial come back after not releasing a new, original piece of music for over 5 years prior to his Ragysh EP which came out on Running Back in April last year. His new It's The Arps EP is forthcoming on fellow native label Smalltown Supersound. This release is somewhat special as it contains the spectacular track 'Inspector Norse' which has been gaining much hype around the internet.

To support this output, 'Swing Star (part 1)' has been given away for free and is available below. It's a superb piece of progressive, melodic, upbeat music which could fit somewhere in the House or Disco area, on a similar vibe, perhaps slightly less "clubby", to 'Inspector Norse' - as mentioned above.

Swing Star (part 1) - Todd Terje

It's The Arps EP is shipping from Juno on 9 January and will be available digitally from the 16th.

Featuring SKUDGE

Stockholm's finest export Skudge are kicking off 2012 by posting previews to instalment five of the Skudge remix series. Techno heavyweight Cosmin TRG and godfather of the UK underground, Boddika, rework the 2011 releases 'Ursa Major' and 'Below' respectively.

Cosmin TRG expertly fits the sinister synth melody from 'Ursa Major' into a well constructed techno track. The moment the melody appears the track really steps up a level, unfortunately it only features once for a brief 30 seconds, would have loved to hear more of it.

Ursa Major (Cosmin TRG Remix) - Skudge [forthcoming Skudge Records]

Boddika puts his own indelible stamp on 'Below' with a characteristically acid laced bassline. Well timed use of the original vocal sample produces a hair raising breakdown, allowing for a climatic build up to a perfectly subdued drop. Both tracks will undoubtedly have dance floors pulsating over the coming months.

Below (Boddika Acid Refix) - Skudge [forthcoming Skudge Records]

Unfortunately for the turntable-less amongst us the Skudge remix series is a strictly analogue affair. No release date as of yet so be sure to keep a close eye on their Facebook page for information on the upcoming release as well as tour dates.

Wednesday

Introducing PALEMAN

Here is a young producer who really caught our eye during 2011. Calum Lee, an extremely talented jazz musician in his own right, goes by the name of Paleman when he is sat at his computer. Earlier tracks were influenced by the sounds of DMZ and Tempa but more recently he has found a groove tucked nicely within the realm of 'UK House' (or whatever you wish to call it).

Pistons - Paleman

Mosca recently featured his own VIP of 'Fake To Go' on a mix for Benji B's Radio 1 show and since then Paleman's output has been outstanding. 'Pistons' is a favourite of ours right now with a lovely rolling drum pattern and an eery atmoshphere. 'Oranounce' meanwhile demonstrates an upfront and relentless techno style. The track below, 'Ritual', demonstrates Paleman's versatility - an afterhours tune for sure. The whole compilation is up for free download.

Calum's tracks have also had play from the likes of Dusk & Blackdown, Loefah and Doorly. And such appreciation keeps on coming - we wish we could tell you more but for the time being you will just have to keep a lookout on his Facebook and Twitter.

Featuring IFAN DAFYDD

After endless debate about who Ifan Dafydd really is, he steps out on Push & Run to release his official debut 12". Following on from the aptly timed and much coveted bootleg of 'No Good' and a nice remix for Emeli Sande we see some original cuts come from the mysterious Welshman.

Treehouse / To Me - Ifan Dafydd [forthcoming Push & Run]

'Treehouse' sees a Ifan really take the style from the "No Good" remix and really refines it. With much more complex beats and a very melodic groove accompanied by some great vocal work the track feels very well rounded. Certainly not a dance floor banger, the track isn't some minimal electronic affair either giving it a lot of replay value whilst still being extremely well produced.

'To Me' definitely takes it down a notch with a healthy layer of classical vibes. The pitched vocals are seamlessly woven throughout the track and with the addition of some strings Ifan takes you somewhere that maybe you were not expecting. Certainly a well crafted and expansive piece of music with so many layers that repeat listening is a must to really hear everything.

James Blake comparisons aside, Ifan Dafydd's music - despite being rooted by similar influences - has grown in quite a different direction and has a much more complex feel. For a debut release this really is very impressive and certainly opens the door for a breakout year.

Treehouse / To Me is available on wax from Push & Run on January 30th with the digital version out February 6th.

Tuesday

Introducing ZIRO

The break of a new year seems to go hand in hand with a bunch of new producers emerging from the shadows. Last year we had Jacques Greene and Koreless shortly followed by Disclosure and in 2010 we had Dark Sky and Jack Dixon. This time we reckon it's Ziro!

We're putting our money on this name cropping up more and more over the coming months as bass driven Techno takes a turn in the spotlight. Boddika, Joy O and Mosca have been heavily pushing this sound recently along with Scuba and his Hotflush label. We're looking forward to hearing more of what's to come out of this Bristol based studio in the coming months...
